چکیده

To explore the potential of using game technologies as cognitive tools for teaching and learning, in this paper we describe a game-like learning environment for sixth-grade space science that engages students in problem-based learning. We discuss the design of cognitive tools built in the environment, review four research studies that investigated how these tools supported problem solving, as well as outline the design implications. Our research shows cognitive tools play an important role in assisting learners’ problem solving and novices rely on using the cognitive tools in support of their knowledge generation. The purpose of this line of research is to examine the use of cognitive tools to facilitate learning and identify best practices for designing effective technologyenriched cognitive tools in learning environments.

Scaffolding Reflection and Articulation of Scientific Explanations in a Data-Rich, Project-Based Learning Environment: An Investigation of Progress Portfolio

In this study, we examined how learners developed scientific explanations about light with the assistance of various technology-based scaffolds. The study emphasis was on scaffolding processes of reflection and articulation. We used a content-neutral software program (Progress Portfolio) to create the instructional scaffolds. A qualitative research design was used to investigate two pairs of pr...

Developing On-line Tools to Support Learners in Problem-Solving Activities

In recent years, research has focused on understanding how learners can benefit from tools that can assist in the development of informal reasoning skills when constructing arguments in collaborative learning with web-based learning environments. A common approach taken by each of these systems is to use support mechanisms (scaffolding) to facilitate student learning through the development of ...

Foundations of Cognitive Support: Toward Abstract Patterns of Usefulness

Computer tools for cognitively challenging activities are considered useful, to a great extent, because of the support that they provide for human thinking and problem solving. To analyze, specify, and design cognitive support, a suitable analytic framework is required. Theories of “distributed cognition” have been offered as potentially suitable frameworks, but they have generally failed to pl...

Cognitive tools, individual differences, and group processing as mediating factors in a hypermedia environment

Much research exists on how problem-solving in hypermedia is assisted through the use of navigational aids. However, as hypermedia becomes more pedagogically rich, the structural characteristics of hypermedia no longer serve merely as navigational aids, but often as cognitive tools. When cognitive tools are embedded in problem-solving hypermedia environments, the objective is the continuous act...

Adaptive Augmented Reality Serious Game to Foster Problem Solving Skills

This paper describes the design of an adaptive intelligent augmented reality serious game which aims to foster problem solving skills in young learners. Studies show that our students lack computational thinking skills in high school, which raises the need to establish new methods to develop these skills in our younger learners. We believe that problem solving skills are the fundamental skills ...
